What Zone 1 and Zone 2 represent
Hazardous-area zoning describes the likelihood that an explosive gas atmosphere may occur at a particular location. Zone 1 generally concerns locations where such an atmosphere can be expected to occur during normal operation, while Zone 2 concerns locations where it is less likely and, if present, is expected to persist only for a limited period. Exact classification must be determined under the applicable project methodology.
Zones describe locations, not products. A facility may contain multiple zones, non-hazardous areas and areas with different release sources. Equipment should therefore be matched to the actual installation point rather than selected from the general name of the plant or process.
Why the zone alone is not sufficient
A correct equipment selection also requires the relevant equipment protection level, gas group, temperature class, ambient range and applicable standards. A device described as suitable for a particular zone cannot automatically be used with every gas, every surface-temperature limitation or every environmental condition.
Projects involving combustible dust require a separate dust-area assessment, including the relevant dust-zone classification and equipment characteristics. Buyers should avoid using gas-zone terminology as a substitute for a complete dust-risk assessment.
Follow a practical equipment selection sequence
Start with the intended electrical function: distribution, local control, cable termination, lighting, ventilation or auxiliary power. Then review the classified location, atmosphere, required protection level and temperature conditions. After the protection basis is established, confirm the electrical ratings and physical installation requirements.
Protection concepts such as Ex db and Ex eb may be relevant, but their suitability depends on the complete equipment design. Cable entries, enclosure material, corrosion exposure and maintenance access should be assessed as part of the same equipment package.
Consider operating and maintenance conditions
An enclosure may face rain, dust, salt exposure, cleaning water, vibration or unusually high ambient temperature. These factors affect ingress protection, material choice, gland selection and service life. IP rating and hazardous-area marking are different technical attributes and should both be included where relevant.
Installation and maintenance must also preserve the protection concept. Incorrect fasteners, unapproved cable entries, damaged sealing surfaces or poorly tightened terminals can undermine a technically appropriate product after it reaches the site.
What buyers should provide to a supplier
Send the zone classification, process medium, gas group, temperature class, ambient conditions, electrical duty, cable schedule and any project-specific documentation requirements. A location drawing or area-classification schedule can help identify which units are intended for different parts of a facility.
